Adventurous Things to do in Durango, CO

If you are visiting Durango, CO and like adventure, you are in luck. There are lots of fun things to do in the area. Here are some of the best adventurous things to do to bring out the daredevil in you during your vacation.

Animas River Trail

If you like hiking, check out the Animas River Trail. It is about 5 miles long and not too steep, with lots to see along the way. You can also rent a bike and take it along the length of the trail. The trail isn’t far from Downtown Durango and there are plenty of restaurants and craft breweries nearby. If you are feeling really adventurous, there is a rafting tour along the river that is fun for the whole family.

Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum

Have you ever wanted to travel in an old-fashioned locomotive? You can at the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum. There you can ride a coal-fired, steam-powered train on the very same tracks settlers traveled over more than 100 years ago. You will also be treated to incredible views of the canyons and the surrounding scenery. The admission price includes entry into the museum where you can learn more about Durango’s railroad history.

San Juan National Forest

If breathtaking views are what you crave, head over to the San Juan National Forest. There you will find 1.8 million acres of unspoiled wilderness. Highlights of the park include 14,000-feet peaks, lots of geological formations and plenty of scenic roads and hiking trails. There is also an abundance of wildlife to admire. This is an especially good place to go in the summer, as it is usually much cooler there than in town.

The Colorado Trail

Another great trail in Durango is the Colorado Trail, which spans around 500 miles all the way to Denver. There is a particularly nice part of the trail that begins at Molas Pass. It’s not too long, is also accessible by bike, and there are lots of wildlife and wildflowers to see. As you make your way toward the Vestal Basin, you will be treated to a host of spectacular views.

If you love horse riding, Buck’s Livery is the place to go. They will hook you up with some fine horses, and they will then take you on a tour you will never forget. It is a great alternative way to enjoy Durango’s trails and scenery.
