Williamson. Four years later, his son joined the venture and became a permanent fixture in the decision making. The garments were of such high quality, during the World War II, the corporation was contracted to manufacture millions of uniforms for the soldiers of US Army. During the post war years, the company steadily grew at a slow pace. The explosion of sales started happening around 1950s, when the corporation was given the opportunity to expend into the European and Middle East regions of the globe. By the late 1980s another branch was established in United Kingdom, and it is still thriving today.

This is Part 2 of the series. Be sure to read Part 1 – A Dangerous Dig.

Trenches used for farming purposes may look harmless, but they are extremely dangerous for construction workers. When dug improperly, trenches can easily cave in, crushing or suffocating anyone at the bottom of the trench. All of these accidents can easily be prevented, simply by following these basic steps as you plan out your next construction project.

To start off, meet with your construction crew to sort out and plan out the project. Here are a few items to bring up when it comes to trenches.

Have a good understanding of the type of soil you will be working with. If it is lose or consistently moist, extra precaution is necessary. A dirt sifter can help sift through dirt to help find dangerous objects or important items.

Know where all the necessary utilities are located. Contact the local utility companies or a utility locator service prior to digging your trench. Utility location can affect the placement of your trench and also the choice of protective equipment and measures you may have to take.

Understand what equipment is required to get the job done. Don’t be in a situation where you have to halt construction for a week in order to get necessary safety equipment in place. Trench shields are one of the most common forgotten safety equipment.

There is a huge amount of equipment necessary for trenches in a construction project. Some, but not all, of these items are listed below:

Proper Trench Shoring set up can make or break a project. Be sure that you are doing it the correct way, or have a professional complete the task. If you unsure what method to use, hydraulic shoring is the most common way to stabilize trenches.

A backhoe will make short work of digging. A backhoe can also help make clean, straight walls in the trench which will add to the integrity of the trench.

Construction harnesses can help prevent fall injuries, which are one of the most common accidents that occur at a construction site.

Objects like hammers and boards accidently fall in construction sites all the time. Hardhats won’t stop those accidents, but they’re reduce the damage.

Emergency kits for both minor wounds and life threatening situations are on-site essentials.

There are plenty of other things to consider when planning out a construction project besides trenches. Have a plan in mind, and when unsure about an issue related to safety, seek out professional help!

Construction of farming trenches can be dangerous tasks for workers. If trenching is not done properly, such as lacking trench shields, injuries and deaths can occur through a cave in, asphyxiation due to lack of oxygen, electrocution due to contact with utilities and even drowning. These are just a few of the hazards that can occur when farming trenching is done improperly.
Initial Planning

The proper starting point for safe farm construction trenches is preplanning. Some of the considerations to make before trenching are;

Soil Conditions. Look at the condition of the soil before and while you dig. Is it hard and cohesive? Does it crumble easy? Does it break along fissure lines? If so, you most certainly need to invest in a temporary road. Answering these questions will help you make the proper determination of what level of protection you will have to take before sending workers into the trench.

Locate utilities. Contact the local utility companies or a utility locater service prior to digging your trench. Utility location can affect the placement of your trench and also the choice of protective equipment and measures you may have to take.

Equipment needed. This includes power and hand equipment and tools needed for digging the trench as well as any safety equipment needed such as shoring and oxygen and gas level monitoring devices.

Placement of spoils. Decide where you will place your spoils. Decide on a placement of spoils at least 2 feet back from the trench in order to avoid cave-ins from the weight and also roll-back on the workers in the trench. A set-back of spoils will also help prevent equipment mishaps.

Access and egress. This is an important part of preplanning for safety. Access and egress should be planned for worker safety. Egress needs to be placed within 25 lateral feet of workers. This can consist of ladders or runways. Runways must meet government standards. Earthen ramps may also be used as long as the worker can walk the ramp upright and they are evaluated by a competent person.

Equipment

Some equipment needed to properly and safely excavate and work in a trench may include the following;

Trench Shield: Before digging, make sure you have a proper available to help support your trench walls.

Hand tools. Hand tools will help you dig in tight spots or in areas where a backhoe is not precise enough, such as around utility lines and pipes.

Safety equipment. This includes the proper trench shoring for the walls. Harnesses, hardhats, boots and maybe even respirators for the workers. Other safety equipment may include oxygen and gas monitoring devices.

Proper pre-planning and appropriate safety measures are critical in any trenching operation. It is imperative that anyone working a trenching operation familiarize themselves with the proper safety rules and procedures in order to eliminate hazards to themselves, workers and the general public.

Come back next week for Part 2–Constructing a Proper Trench.

I couldn’t have said it better. The good folks over at Heirloom Organics have a “How to Grow Barley” guide. They’ve got all the information you need in a nice easy to follow format. Here are the highlights:

Barley grows best in cool ground–ideal temperatures are close to freezing.

Summer barley is different. For winter barley, early-to-mid-October is the best time to plant. For spring barley, plant at the first of the year.

Plant the seeds in rows ensuring that there are twenty to twenty-five seeds per ft^sq of space.

Grow barley as you would wheat–some varieties are spring planted and some are fall planted. Barley ripens sooner than wheat ,though, so you’ve got to watch out. Spring-planted barley ripens in 60 to 70 days, fall-planted barley about 60 days after growth begins. Barley fits well into a double-cropping scheme and a variety of crop rotations.

Barley is harvested the same as wheat: cut, bundled and shocked to dry. Wear a shirt when harvesting barley as the awns can irritate your skin. Barley may be stored in the bundle and fed to stock without threshing.

Keep out weeds by weeding by hand for a small crop. An application of herbicide may be necessary for a large crop to keep out the weeds.

Barley does not require too much watering. Too much watering can lead to decomposition.

As always, pick the best workwear possible when planting to minimize chaffing and discomfort. We prefer Dickies Workwear…but Carhartt Clothing works as well.

Seeds

1 – 2 days, 34F to 36F

2 Years

Well Drained

Full Sun

20 – 25 seeds sq. ft.

10″ to 12″ apart

40 – 55

What is Mycorrhiza? It’s no slang term or random, ridiculous made up word. It’s actually a scientific term which defines the relationship between a fungus and the roots of a plant. This relationship is referred to as symbiotic, meaning that it involves a long-term, close interaction between dissimilar species in biology. In fact, this bizarre word refers to this mutualistic relationship that occurs commonly between most plant species which many of us encounter in everyday life. There are some fungi which have increased infection in plants, meaning that they have the potential to possibly affect humans and animals in the future as well. This is where protective products like Dickies Coveralls come in. Therefore, precautions should be taken when handling any plant containing a high amount of fungi. For protection from such fungi, heavy duty work wear adds protection from direct contact. We suggest Dickies Outerwear for comfortable, durable protection from any harmful elements of nature. Check out these products and more available online and don’t let them know we sent you over!
